The Public Theater and the Department of Cultural Affairs funded a $40 million restoration, renovation and lobby redesign of the 1890 Astor Library, home to the Public since 1967. The redesign expands the boundaries of the 1967 lobby, creating a new and greater sense of public space for this unique multi-venue theater. The painstaking restoration of the historic plasterwork of the lobby, the addition of a modern granite stoop and glass canopy, and the reorganization of the stairwells flanking the lobby, will make the building safer for larger crowds and will help ensure a bright future for the Public.
